What Exactly is a Chemical Peel and who should get it?

Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, or hands and can be used to: Reduce fine lines under the eye and around the mouth, treat wrinkles and aging, improve the appearance of mild scars, treat certain types of acne, reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A Chemical peel is a skin resurfacing treatment that involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin that makes it peel off eventually giving birth to a newer, less wrinkled, and smoother skin.

The chemical solution removes a uniform amount of damaged skin cells across the treatment area. When done well (by a dermatologist), this allows the skin to heal, with minimal scarring or color changes because of the treatment.

It usually affects two key layers of our skin, namely, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the visible outer layer, while the dermis sits just beneath. This deeper layer contains nerve endings, sweat glands, and hair follicles.

It removes a controlled amount of skin cells from the epidermis. A stronger peel may also remove a small part of the dermis.

There are different types of Chemical peels depending on the kind of issues you want to address. They include:

  • Light chemical peel: A light (superficial) chemical peel removes the outer layer of skin (epidermis). It’s used to treat fine wrinkles, acne, uneven skin tone and dryness. You might have a light peel every two to five weeks.
  • Medium chemical peel: A medium chemical peel removes skin cells from the epidermis and from portions of the upper part of your middle layer of skin (dermis). It’s used to treat wrinkles, acne scars and uneven skin tone. You might need to repeat the procedure to achieve or maintain the desired result.
  • Deep chemical peel: A deep chemical peel removes skin cells even deeper. For deeper wrinkles, scars or precancerous growths, your dermatologist after a consultation session, would likely recommend what’s best for you. You will not need repeat procedures to get the full effect.
