ACNE COSMETICA

I heard the amazing songstress and philanthropist; Alicia Keys has decided to stop wearing makeup. I think a lot of us might need to join on this band wagon soon or at least pay more attention to the ingredients in the products we use / reduce how often we wear makeup. Ever heard of ‘acne cosmetica’? Well, acne cosmetica is simply a form of acne triggered by cosmetic use. Cosmetic products in this sense is not restricted to makeup as it refers to any product applied to the face and the surrounding areas such as hair gels, conditioners etc. This condition can occur in males or females, even those not previously predisposed to acne breakouts.

When a cosmetic product accumulates within the follicle, the pore becomes blocked. Excess skin oil builds up, clogging the pore and creating a blemish.  Acne cosmetica affects areas like the cheeks and forehead where cosmetics, hair care products, and lotions are most frequently applied. The condition develops over a period of weeks or months and appears as small, itchy, or rash-like pink bumps as opposed to red, inflamed papules and pustules usually seen in acne vulgaris (the common acne we know). If changes in product use, hygiene practices, or application techniques are not altered, it may persist indefinitely.

Ironically, when patients notice these, their first instinct is to apply make up to conceal the blemishes thereby causing a vicious cycle.

Personally, i always encourage patients to search for comedogenic (pore clogging) ingredients in their skin care products. Try to avoid products that contain “isopropyl”, “isostearyl”, or “myristyl”.

It’s best to look for the products labelled as hypo-allergenic or fragrance-free. You can also test any new product by applying it to the back of your ears for 2 to 3 days. If you don’t feel any irritation, you can then apply it to the larger areas. Also ensure you style your hair/weaves away from your face as much as possible.

I think we should all try this ‘no makeup/minimal makeup’ revolution once in a while, I’m certain our skins would truly appreciate it.
